This class structure is based on the Intermediate series of postures taught in Mysore, India by K. Pattabhi Jois. Called Nadi Shodana in Sanskrit or "nerve cleansing," this sequence emphasizes spinal stretching and back bending variations that strengthen and open the spine, hips, and shoulders, stimulate the central nervous system and leave the practitioner feeling energized.
This course is suitable for students who are comfortable practicing the primary series with pranayama, bandha and dristi, who want to learn the intermediate series of poses with the movement of their breath. We will include demonstration and information time so that students can learn the name and benefit of poses, practice them with repetitions, and adopt modifications. We will emphasize energetic sequences so that students can holistically experience the series as an arrangement of postures with breath phrasing, and begin to cultivate their own insights.
Students should be prepared to practice energetically by being hydrated and not eating heavily for at least a few hours before class.

Katherine Shriver's ashtanga yoga practice began in 2000 with authorized teacher David Ingalls, and builds on 16 years of modern dance education that includes training at Sarah Lawrence College and Harvard. Her teaching celebrates the teachers who have graced her life with the blessing of yoga, especially Sri K Pattabhi Jois and family in Mysore, and her current teacher, Christopher Hildebrandt in NYC. Other very influential teachers include Guy Donahaye, Eric Powell and Richard Freeman. An ashtanga instructor for four years, Katherine has taught intermediate ashtanga at Studio b, Lifesport, and AFC clubs since 2006. She presents a traditional yet accessible style that emphasizes hands-on adjustments with brief spoken cues that foster a sense of presence, organic alignment and meditative movement.ャン She is very grateful to share with the Yoga Squared community.
