What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga Yoga is a complete system of physical, mental and spiritual training as prescribed by the ancient text of the yoga korunta, and as taught by Sri T. Krishnamacharya and his disciple, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.

Ashtanga Yoga (Eight Limbed Yoga) combines a specific method of breath with movement (vinyasa). Postures are linked together progressively, by counting an in hale or exhale. Physical energy locks in the body called "bandhas", are combined with the breath and movement resulting in a powerful and evolutionary yoga practice.

Each posture and vinyasa aids in detoxifying the body and mind. The method promotes healing as well as relaxation. The benefits of practicing this method are felt immediately through a physical awareness. Vitality is achieved with a natural progression in to self knowledge and exploration when one practices the method regularly.

Mysore

Mysore Practice of Ashtanga Yoga is the traditional way of learning the sequence of each series. This method allows students to have an individualized yoga practice which develops progressively and is overseen by an experienced teacher. The sequence of postures is learned in pieces and as they are mastered the student progresses and builds a personal practice. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois teaches the method in this manner in Mysore, India, which is why it is called the "Mysore Style". Classes are small and students receive one on one attention . All levels practice in this setting even though at different paces. Beginners are encouraged to start in this manner.

Mysore allows for each student to have a practice which is individually tailored to his or her needs. Teachers will adjust the practice to the students age and state of being. Instructors use hands-on adjustments and are always around should a student forget the sequencing. A deeper understanding of the postures is achieved by practicing in this way.

Led Primary Series

The led primary series is counted aloud in Sanskrit and English by a teacher. All students move together through the primary series. This class is suitable for all levels except absolute beginners. Previous yoga experience whether ashtanga or other, is required.
